Directed by Peter Jackson and written by Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will be the third and final installment in the three-part film adaptation based on The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. It is preceded by An Unexpected Journey (2012) and The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and concludes the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins, who joins the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

The film was titled "There and Back Again" but Jackson changed the title to "The Battle of the Five Armies" as he thought the new title better suited the situation of the film.

Warner. Bros will distribute the film on 12 December 2014 in the United Kingdom, 17 December 2014 in the United States and 26 December 2014 in Australia.
The film's première will be held in Wellington, New Zealand.
